I put my friend onto a job at my workplace when we were both living in the US, even though we were just merely acquainted then. We both returned to Nigeria and I didn’t know that gesture was such a big deal for her cause she gave me a place to stay for over a year when I moved to her city here in Nigeria. She got a job and seemed to excel generally ahead of me, but I was always genuinely happy for her and cheering her on even though I was broke and jobless for so long. 5 years later, I now earn about four times her salary and she’s also cheering me on. They promoted her at work the same day my salary was increased. We were gisting and laughing at our broke days. Whoever is doing better at any point has always supported the other and we are able to speak freely about our wins without fear of seemingly oppressing the other. I’m glad envy or competition has never been a factor in our friendship. I’m married now. I hope she meets a great guy soon.
