I’m a 24 year old girl living in Lagos, yesterday at around 7pm I ordered a ride from Igboefon to Lekki phase 1 to buy food, 20 minutes into the ride when we got to freedom way, some police men stopped my uber and said they wanted to search me for illegal substances like (drugs, weed, etc). After searching my bag and seeing nothing, the police man asked me to come down from my uber so he could search the car, immediately I got down he magically found Colorado wrapped underneath the carpet below where I sat, I was in shock because everything happened so fast, I told him I don’t know what it was and how it got there, they put me in their vehicle saying they would take me their station and it’s a serious issue, that once I get there I’ll be in trouble. After all the back and forth I made few calls to people I knew could help me, while on the call seeing that their plans may not work out, one of them was trying to bargain with me on how much I should settle them. The person on the call with me eventually helped out and I didn’t get to pay a dime. This same thing happened to someone I know few weeks ago and it was worse because he was a guy, also on dreads, they immediately took him to the station where he ended up paying #400k. I don’t even know if the Uber drivers are in on this too. But what if you don’t know anyone who can help you in such situations. What if you don’t even have money to settle them. Is that how innocent people are being captured, imprisoned and abused, some people just disappear we don’t even know where they are. This is a new update now o! Please be careful! Always search the Ubers you are entering and make a video as a proof before a police man will find Colorado that you are not carrying, if you are not lucky you may be jailed or exploited massively. I think this is a new scheme now in Lagos!
