I went to school in Ogun State for university so basically most of the students in my school are Yoruba and they would always do this thing where they would switch from English to Yoruba if they don’t want you to hear what they’re saying (all tribes do this and not just Yoruba people) I didn’t bother to learn cause I hate the language and have really bad experience with some of them from my school so I had a bad impression about Yoruba people entirely and we all know Yoruba people and their backbiting problems. Anyway I started dating this Yoruba guy and anytime he is around his friends he speaks English but switch to Yoruba mid sentence, even when he wants to communicate with them. I’ve told him I don’t like the fact that he does that and I would be comfortable if he speaks just English to his friends around me and he gets defensive about it and asks me why I want to know what they are saying and why I’m so interested in what they are saying around me but whenever someone speaks Hausa to me he always wants to know what they are saying to me and I always tell him. So what I do is anytime he switches to Yoruba with his friends and leave the room and go somewhere else and don’t translate anything to him when someone speaks Hausa to him. This issue will make me break up with him cause I’m losing interest in him fast.
